IBCプログラムの英語授業でJICAの海外移住資料館を見学しました
経営学部のIBC（国際コミュニケーション）プログラムの1年生の授業では、国連の持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)について1年間かけて英語で学びます。
その一環として、前期の授業では、日本国際協力機構(JICA)について調査し、発表を行います。また、みなとみらいキャンパスから徒歩圏内にあるJICAの日本海外移住博物館を見学します。この博物館では、日本人の海外移住労働者の生活と海外での生活の歴史について学ぶことができるため、前期の最後に授業で取り上げるSDG 8「働きがいも経済成長も」の学びを実社会の事例と結びつけて考えるよい機会となります。
今年は6月16日にIBCプログラムの一年生とチャールズ・ハースト准教授が日本海外移住博物館を訪れ、日本人移民の歴史について学ぶガイドツアーに参加しました。学生たちは、かつて、より良い就労機会を求め、自身や故郷に残る家族・親族の生活を支えるために海外へ移住した日本人の実像について学修しました。
中でも多くの学生の目に留まったのが、日本人移民が海外での新しい生活を始めるために日本から持参した品々の展示でした。とりわけ、ブラジルに移住した日本人が使用していたカメラが現代のスマートホンのカメラに比べて格段に大きく、扱いにくそうであることに驚いていました。

●Visited the JICA Overseas Migration Museum as part of the IBC program
As part of the Kanagawa University IBC program, students learn about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in English. Over two semesters, students cover all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
During the first semester, students research and give presentations about the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The students found out that JICA has a building in Yokohama near the Minato Mirai Campus. One of the resources JICA manages is the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum, located on the second floor of the JICA building. The museum focuses on the lives of Japanese migrant workers and their lives abroad throughout history.
The museum is perfectly aligned with SDG 8, "Decent Work and Economic Growth," which the students study to complete the spring semester.
On June 16th, the IBC students and their professor, Charles Hirst, visited the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum.
The students took part in a private guided tour to learn all about the history of Japanese migrants. The students were surprised that some Japanese had historically moved abroad to seek better employment opportunities and improve their economic prospects for themselves and their relatives back home.
For many students, the highlight was seeing the items Japanese migrants chose to bring from Japan to start their new lives abroad. The most popular item was the antique camera used in Brazil. The students couldn't believe how big and difficult it was to use compared to their mobile phone cameras.
