Faculty of Science
(Shonan-Hiratsuka Campus)
The Faculty of Science is dedicated to instilling basic academic ability in the sciences coupled with general knowledge, with further priority given to specialized education aimed at development and synthesis pursued with practical applications in mind. The faculty is comprised of three departments (that respectively focus on mathematics and information science, materials science, and biology) and one interdisciplinary program, all of which strive to educate individuals who pursue their work with a comprehensive perspective in the context of society.
Integrated Science Program
Established in 2006, this new program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that cuts across the boundaries of the three existing departments to ensure a well-rounded education that combines broad knowledge of the sciences with exposure to the liberal arts. During the first two years, students acquire a firm grounding in mathematics, physics, information science and other natural sciences. During the last two years they are assigned to specific professors within one of the three departments, where they pursue more specialized study.
Department of Information Sciences
By studying the basic theory of information technology and computer science, becoming familiar with advanced applications, and taking up themes currently on the cutting edge of inquiry in mathematics and physics which are bases of science, students in this department develop the high degree of creativity and technical expertise they need to enter the vanguard in the ongoing effort to create an advanced IT society. They select one of the following two courses in their first year and pursue studies and research.
Course in Information
Four themes: Software Design; Internet/Web Technology; Parallel Distributed Architecture; and Intelligence and Sensibility.
Course in Mathematics and Physics
Three themes: Mathematics and Simulation; Nano-Science and Semi-Conductors; and Space, Elementary Particles, and Atomic Nuclei.
Department of Chemistry
The discipline of chemistry, which clarifies the structure and characteristics of matter and enables the creation of new substances, lies at the very heart of many sciences and technologies. This department offers both lectures and laboratory work that enable students to learn chemistry as a basic science, while also helping them to master such practical fields as materials science and environmental chemistry. In addition, experiments using advanced equipment is carried out at the High-Tech Research Center, which is dedicated to the research and development of high-performance molecular and biological photonics.
Department of Biological Sciences
A knowledge of the biological sciences is essential in the quest to solve various issues related to human coexistence with nature, including environmental conservation, the securing of biological resources, and the development of regenerative medical treatments, to name a few. This department offers three courses that provide specialized knowledge of the biological sciences, enable students to apply that knowledge, and cultivate in them the ability to use new technologies.
Course in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Students in this course study biological phenomena from the perspective of molecular properties.
Course in Individual and Cellular Biology
Organisms are investigated in terms of cellular structure and characteristics.
Course in Natural History and Ecology
Emphasis is placed on the study of the biosphere created by groups of organisms and their living environment.
