Self-Assessment and Evaluation Activities

In order to enhance the quality of its education and research and fulfill its social obligations, Kanagawa University carries out self-assessment and evaluation of all aspects of university activity, including its organization and finances, in addition to its academic endeavors. These self-assessment and evaluation tasks form the basis of third-party evaluation of the university. Active efforts are made to publicize evaluation results with the aim of discharging our responsibilities to the wider community.

Activities to Date

The university began conducting its own self-assessment and evaluation activities in 1992. The Standards for Establishment of Universities were amended in 1999, by the government, university self-assessment became obligatory. Kanagawa University started a university-wide self-assessment program in the same year. In the 2000 academic year, the university underwent evaluation by peer review through the Japan University Accreditation Association (JUAA). In the 2002 academic year, a University-wide Self-Assessment and Evaluation Committee was established to conduct these activities on an ongoing basis.

Following an amendment to the School Education Act introducing mandatory third-party evaluation by government-certified bodies, the School of Law, a professional graduate school, received accreditation from JUAA in the 2008 academic year on the basis of self-assessment conducted in the previous year. In March 2009, despite expressing high regard for the commitment to community engagement and the Legal Clinic Program by School of Law, JUAA ruled that the School did not meet some of the standards for accreditation of law schools.

Improvements were made, and an application for re-evaluation was filed in April 2010. Meanwhile, the university as a whole−including the School of Law−conducted self-assessment in the 2008 academic year and underwent evaluation by JUAA in the 2009 academic year. In March 2010, JUAA confirmed that Kanagawa University met the standards for university operation, thus validating the improvements made in the School of Law.
